Boardmans had its beginnings as a hardware store named Sam Newman’s. Tom Boardman purchased two retail outlets of this store in November 1982 and started South Africa’s first homeware store. The business grew and gained Pick ‘n Pay as a financial partner in June 1984. The company was taken over by the Pick ‘n pay group in 1986 and opened up in 26 locations around the country.
Boardman’s was integrated into the Edcon group from 1 April 2004. This allowed the Boardmans franchise to enter into a new market of kitchenware, table top goods and home decor using its well-established and reputable brand name and existing customer base. The Chief Executive Officer of Edcon was only too happy to aquire the partnership of Boardmans, as the company had a successful turnover of R211 million for the year ended 2003.
